Two telecommunication satellites were launched into space Wednesday in French Guiana to provide services for the Middle East and Africa, local media reported. The NILESAT 201 and the RASCOM-QAF1R satellites were lifted off by an Ariane-5 rocket from the launch center in Kourou, French Guiana, on the northeast coast of South America, according to live TV broadcast. Both satellites were built by Thales Alenia Space with a designed life of 15 years, said the Arianespace company. The NILESAT 201, weighing about 3,200 kg, will provide direct-to-home television broadcast services to the Middle East and North Africa for the Egyptian operator Nilesat. |
